Rediscovering Magic Railroad

hdr_mr_rediscovered.jpg

Read here how the story has unfolded, and how seven years on from its original release, Magic Railroad has regained prominence in the hearts of fans.

The rumors about the movie have persisted for years, especially regarding the villain PT Boomer, also sometimes referred to as ‘Pete Boom’. Boomer could be seen in the trailer falling off the viaduct, confronting Burnett Stone in one page of the movie’s coloring book, and speculated as being the author of the ‘huge explosion’ that caused Thomas to tumble in the storybook version of the movie published by Random House. It was comparable to a long-lost relative seen in family photos, but no one you asked knew anything about them.

But since no new information was available, the questions remained unanswered, and the topic faded away, only to resurface every once in a while.

Until recently.

February 27, 2007 to be exact, and shortly thereafter Ryan, Eric and Jim each had a hardcopy of the script. Continuing with the lost relative analogy, it was as if we found their personal journal in the dark corner of a dusty attic!

Once the news broke in the Sodor Island Forums about the script’s discovery and revelations, you could say that events began moving fast. Really fast!

Thus, we began our journey in rediscovering the Magic Railroad.

The Journey - A SIF Collective Effort…

It goes without saying that this journey could be not have been undertaken alone, or only by a few individuals. While it's true that the authors of this section of the Fansite, during their research, contacted some very fascinating people associated with the movie, credit must also be given to the collective and sharp memory of the Sodor Island Forums membership. Your recollections and encouragement were instrumental in taking us all to our destination of discovery!

Anime Boy, 01Salty and Nanaki recalling seeing Diesel 10 sans Pinchy in the book 'Diesel 10 Means Trouble (In the script, Diesel 10's claw is initially concealed).

Jock, Aidan Rae recalling seeing PT Boomer in the coloring book, and of the 'explosion' in the storybook.

Sillyevan about Diesel 10's different accents found in the movie's teaser and segments of the trailer. DonaldandDouglas for confirming that 'Boomer' can also be seen in the trailer on the UK version of the DVD. SiF's resident comedic genius Alaric, for his speculation about  Eric Idle being the narrator of one of the movie's teasers. We'll prove your theory right some day!

Datalore and thincontroller, who asked the questions about the crossroads scene in the movie, that led to everyone wondering about the 'biker', and Ci putting the evidence from the script (Lily's photograph) and movie together.

OJ for remembering 'Doug Lennox' seen in the pre-release film credits ages past, and Sillyevan for discovering a photo of Doug and Peter Fonda taken on the Isle of Man, and Clay Halford for the main link to Doug's website revealing his X-Men connection.

That was one of our first big breaks. From the contact address found on the website, OJ and Ryan contacted Mr. Lennox, with Ryan receiving wonderful never-before revealed insight from Doug in his correspondence with the actor.

Crow T. Sean-Bot for discovering PT Boomer 'lying' atop Diesel 10 during the chase scene, and Ci for confirming it.

Loey Machan's exquisite observations of the background details including his brilliant schematic drawings of a real-life modified prototype for Lady, and exveefan for finding other possible prototypes.

Kudos go to Blue Pioneer, for finding a photo of Eddie Glen - the voice behind Thomas.

And thanks to Chris & Sillyevan for clarifying that Peter Fonda's anguish and Mr. Conductor's campfire scenes were indeed in the movie. Seen by themselves, these scenes were so powerful, that my original bias against the movie purged them out of old TT's memory altogether!

Thanks go to Perryton for finding the behind the scenes featurette on the German edition of the movie's DVD. Learning a foreign language does have its benefits!

Now That We’ve Arrived…

The background information provided by the script and by the wonderful people we've been corresponding with have given us a better appreciation for the movie, its production and what the original intent for this feature would've been like.

The year 2010 will mark the 10th anniversary of the movie's release. We are aware that the director's cut of the movie may be lying in a studio film vault somewhere in Hollywoodland. It would take a lot of magic gold dust but wouldn't it be nice if...
